Who are the School Counselors?
School Counselors are certified/licensed educators who help improve student success for ALL students by implementing a comprehensive academic counseling student support program. Appropriate duties include:
Individual student academic planning and goal setting
School counseling presentations based on student success standards Multi-Tiered System of Supports
Short-term counseling student support
Referrals for long-term student support
Collaboration with families, teachers, administrators, and community for student success
Advocacy for students at individual education plan meetings and other student-focused meetings
Data analysis to identify student issues, needs and challenges
Multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS)
American School Counselor Association (ASCA)
The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) recommends an ideal caseload of 250 students per School Counselor.
Tier 1
Universal Support Services
Standard and Competency based School Counselor Core Curriculum Lessons, Activities and Events for all students.
Tier 2
Targeted Interventions
Students who are exhibiting barriers in learning or struggling academically AND who are deserving of additional student support services.
Tier 3
Intensive Interventions
Students who are experiencing an emergency or a crisis or to support students with needs that remain unresolved from Tier 2.
