French 1

This introductory French language course provides students with a foundation in communication skills and cultural understanding. The curriculum focuses on the three modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational, and covers the six themes outlined in the AP French Language & Culture framework.

Through a combination of culturally authentic materials, grammatical instruction, and language acquisition strategies, students develop the necessary skills to effectively communicate in French. The course emphasizes performance and proficiency-based tasks, enabling students to demonstrate their language abilities in real-life contexts.

Designed as the first level of the World Languages Continuum, this course equips students with the fundamental language skills required for further progression. It fulfills the World Languages/Fine Arts requirement of the East Side Union High School District and satisfies 1 unit of the World Languages requirement at the University of California and California State University.

To ensure a cohesive language learning experience, it is highly recommended for students to take each language course consecutively, in successive years. By actively engaging in this course, students will not only develop their French language proficiency but also gain a deeper appreciation for the French culture and its diverse linguistic landscape.

French 3 is designed to review and further develop the skills acquired in both French 2 and French 3, solidifying the foundation for continued language learning. Successful completion of this course satisfies the World Language/Fine Arts requirement of the East Side Union High School District, and it also satisfies 1 unit of the World Languages requirement at the University of California and California State University.

Throughout French 3, students will engage deeply with the French language and culture. Immersed in the French language, students will primarily communicate in French inside the classroom, enhancing their linguistic proficiency and confidence. Performance and proficiency language tasks will be utilized to assess progress and meet the expectations of advanced language proficiency.

French 4 is designed to prepare students for the AP French Language & Culture Exam. The course provides comprehensive coverage of the exam's content and requirements, ensuring that students are well-prepared to demonstrate their proficiency. Successful completion of the AP Exam may result in students receiving the California State Seal of Biliteracy and earning credit at most universities and colleges.

Throughout the course, students will engage with authentic materials, such as literature, articles, videos, and audio recordings, to deepen their understanding of the French language and culture. They will refine their communication skills, both orally and in writing, and develop a heightened awareness of cultural nuances and perspectives.

By the end of French 4, students will have attained an advanced level of proficiency in the French language.
